Hi

I wish to replace a leaking sump gasket in my 1980 Spider , is this possible to do without removing the engine, possibly loosening the engine mounts and raising it up a little?

Thanks in advance

Hi John

Yes you can replace it like that. You need to clear the subframe and the oil pickup.

To add to what Peter said:

You'll need to remove both subframe bolts on the engine side, and slacken the other two.
Small bits of timber between the frame and body will keep the subframe down.

I used a heavy timber beam between the shock turrets and a threaded rod to wind the engine up.

Once the exhaust is touching the subframe at the back, that's as far as you can go, but
you then should have enough clearance to wiggle the sump out.
