Hi , This started in ‘ New Members ‘ but I guess this is where it should continue . Triumph Spitfire , F/L 2.0 injection . I just received this well priced Beta head from a very helpful EBay gentleman , partly for the top water pipe which might be useful on my Delta reverse port head to connect the rear outlet forwards towards the radiator . https://flic.kr/p/2kboi5VAlso I may possibly have found a standard sized crank for the 130tc engine I wish to sell . I could also be closer to obtaining some Delta Carrillo rods . I think Eric kindly suggested these should be compatible with a 124/131/Beta type 2.0 crank ? Good afternoon, I spoke with Lain Swan at SMD this morning regarding starting the build . Lain once worked for Guy and remained a friend . If I heard right ( correct me if I am wrong , I imagine some on here will know ) he said that Guy’s funeral will be this Monday . He will be attending . RIP Guy .
Lain also says that SMD are currently fairly booked up , which is good to hear in these times , so a start date might not be until towards February .

I was not sure about going the reverse port route but it might actually give me some advantage . I have moved the engine back 4” compared to the Triumph position ( and 4” lower as it happens from PO’s ownership ) . This sits the F/L Tc engine slightly into the bulkhead . The worry then is , will either the carbs/injectors now on the drivers side or the header now on the passenger side , clear the bulkhead ?
Hopefully , the Webcon manifold , angled normally to move the carbs/injectors rear wards , out of the way of the drivers side front end of the block mounted distributor , will , now on the opposite side of the block move the injectors forwards from the bulkhead . Likewise the Allison’s header which on a regular TC head has the no 1 primary heading rewards from the front of the head will on a reverse port head now have the no 4 primary , heading forwards away from the bulkhead . Hope that makes sense ? This is just theory until I take the relevant parts into the garage so keeping my fingers crossed . Let me know if I am missing something please . Thanks

Good afternoon , Now no one can object to this post as it is totally Beta related . I placed a bid on a barn find ( emphasis on ‘ barn ‘ ) Beta engine and box fairly local to me . I had not expected to win but Ebay is very unpredictable ! The owner is in Sittingbourne so I shall hire a van for the day to pick it up . One bonus is that SMD whom I am looking to use for my build is also in Sittingbourne so it will give me the opportunity to hopefully pop in and see them . I am hoping it might be 2.0 and if so just may offer up a standard crank , hopeful thinking perhaps ! I will certainly be looking to sell off the box at a low price and also the cam belt cover and the water pipe to start with . I shall list these once I have retrieved it all next week . Where I am going to put it I have no idea ATM !

Hi I used Glyco bearings on my 2000 hpe Standard is numbered 01-4175/4
Got them from Car Parts in Motion for £35.50
They've done few miles so far but seem ok.
BTW I'm in ME10 and will be visiting SMD soon.
Regards Nigel

Hi Nigel , if yours were tri-metal you paid a lot less than I did . Are you looking for Lain to do some work for you ?

That gearbox looks remarkably clean, and so (apart from some rust) does the engine. Interested to know what you've actually got there...

Am I right in thinking all Beta 1600s were 1585 84 x 71.5 ?

There is also a 1592cc in a Beta. I think it's an earlier version.
I don't know which type bearings I have, but for normal road use I don't think it matters very much.

Hi Nigel , 1592 Beta was not shown in GC book . I already have a complete 1592 sitting in the garage so would rather a 1585 . I did see however that there was a big valve 138 AR000 version also ? You did not say your reason for your visit to SMD ?

Turns out Lain is working in Essex this week so will not be getting to see him . Also the guy running the company I had arranged to hire the van from seems to have gone AWOL so not convinced that is going to go smoothly .

Ok , well , just been informed it is a 1.6 so crank no good to me . Obviously you'd prefer an untouched crank but supply is running out. I have a reground 2.0 litre crank that is available if you're interested. Chris

Thank you Chris for the offer . The 130tc engine I have for sale is completely rebuilt , rebored , new pistons , new oil pump , new water pump , new belt , new valve guides but the rebuild included a regrind with new shells . Many people agree with the late GC that the 2.0 crank should never ideally be reground , removing the hardened surface , so I am hoping to locate a good standard size 2.0 crank . I have a brand new short block I could use but it seems a waste to use this if I can find a good used crank . I am still picking up the barn find 1.6 Beta engine and box tomorrow so will post details as I come by them .

Hi , So I picked up the engine and box today . Block 828BB 0A 0 Head 4371507 The owner John who does grass track racing in his spare time suggested it had come from a very low mileage Beta who’s body had gone rotten , so was just stuck in a barn/lock up for years . He was going to rebuild it but with liners to bring it down in CC to his series regs . After a quick hoover and a spray up I was shocked that I managed to turn it over easily with a 5” adjustable spanner having stupidly put the 130tc engine in front of my tool cabinet !! I have to say the muddy industrial site on the Thames marshes where he is based did look pretty intimidating but he was a gent . As I can not use the crank it seems a shame this does not go back into a Beta after a good rebuild so it might soon be listed .
