Hi all,

with the first mot under my ownership approaching for my HPE VX Im wandering if you could help me with my wipers.... TBH they are barely functioning as they make it across the screen and then struggle to make it back.. even in the constant modes theres usually a lack of movement.... sometimes they come alive and make it back to the other side but then never park properly and i end up having to look thro them if i go for a drive...

I read that a modern relay can replace the old intermittent wipe relay - if someone can point me to it then I would be grateful....
Ive not managed to get the steering wheel off yet to clean up the stalk switch contacts.... thats on the list.
other than that Im not sure what else i can do... perhaps clean the earth points behind the dash unit??
any help greatly appreciated...

Does sound like an earthing problem. Probably the motor earth itself given how bad it is. Also is the wiper mechanism itself moving freely and lubricated?

Hi

Ideally chase it through with a volt meter to see if you are losing voltage at some point, most likely will be on the earth side given the way the earth works on these cars via the chassis. It may be a faulty motor of course, but as Neil says it could just be the spindles as they come through from inside to outside are really gummed up. This was the case with mine when I took them apart. Disconnecting from the motor and moving by hand will give you a good idea on that.

Jim,
Just to add to the wisdom above, the wiper assembly is easy to remove. Wipers off, then huts and washers, then 2 or 3 nuts in the scuttle.

It comes out with a little jiggerypokery!
Thin circlips hold the spindles into the housings, they fly away never to be seen again.....
Clean and grease etc.....

One other thought Jim,

Regardless of the earthing point behind the instrument cluster, I would
create a new earth for the wiper motor. A simple wire in the scuttle would do the job.

I haven't done this yet, but i'm just about to!
