Beta & Trevi parts manuals on Microfiche (microfilm)

I have few of these microfilm sheets.

Is it worth scanning them in? I see Omicron and Viva-Lancia have done some but all.

Berlina R/79 7a edition (series 3 Berlina)
Trevi 2a edtion
Coupe HPE 9a edition
Montecarlo 3a edition

Have these parts been put onto CD already?

Thanks

there were three different paper parts books for beta and one for montecarlo before they changed over to microfiche (as this equates to about a tonne of paper compared with a few grams you can see why they changed over!!), I think it is these that omicron and viva lancia sites have scans of not the microfiche. I have fiches and a reader which is handy but it would be nice to have printed copies or a cd format to print from of the late series2 FL2 coupé/hpe fiche I'd certainly chip in a small sum for a disc, question is how much would it cost to scan them I think it may well be a bit specialised unless you can do it yourself??   I also have a quick reference guide for parts this is paper based and presumably printed to avoid the hassle in the parts department of constantly using the microfiche it covers essential bits and bobs (lights/brakes/basic engine bits)  i could make copies of the relevant pages of that at some time if they would be of use

BetaBoyz would be very interested in helping with this project, Mark Wastnidge also owns a microfiche reader and the full Lancia microfiche range.

we looked into this a couple of year's ago and could not find anyone able to scan from a microfiche.

Mark was told the Ministry of Defence had a machine that would do the job  Huh?

but never found a solution.

can anyone help Huh?

Cheers
Tony,

ps: just seen your last post Jason, how did you copy the microfiche looks a lot better than the one I tried.

Biggest job on any microfiche is cleaning, you really need a "detailer"  Wink.  Bulbs are usually the
biggest outlay, cheap ones are available, but like anything else you get what you pay for.

Quite a few Libraries and local newspaper offices have machines with printing facilities.

All I have access to are readers not scanners.  No doubt MoD, British Library and the majority of the national press have a scanning to disk facility, but getting anyone to scan a whole set of 'fiches is probably unlikely?

The large NCR needs a good service inc a bulb.  By large I mean having a ~19" screen as we would have found in the town library.

The Kodak Ektalite 120 reader used here is much smaller table-top type.  So I set up the my 7Mpix camera on a tripod and photographed the display.  Annoyingly, Fiat/Lancia used a non-standard array so you need to either chop the 'fiche into quarters or make up a correct carrier (hence the curvature mistake because I didn't want to chop).  Then throw the image through a photo package to correct the levels, clean any bad scratches, then 'reverse' into a 'negative' image for printing as a positive to paper.  There would be no need to do the 'reverse' for the Trevi 'fiche is a positive already for some reason.  I also reduced size down to 1024x768 as it was fine for a test print.

See also this old thread over on Lancisti

I toyed with just pressing ahead with the Berlina3 and Trevi transfer, but it's effort put towards models with barely any survivors... Grin   If they were service manuals, yes ok.  But Part Number books are obsolete especially when FIAT UK didn't even keep a record of my Beta chassis number  Roll Eyes

What to do....

I've stripped cleaned fiddled etc with my reader and come up with these I think the negative looks worse than the adjusted 'as is' photo reckon with a tripod in the dark I could do some quite sharp pictures these were done hand held so a bit shaky

these were shot quite close up (as my spare engine is next to the reader can't get any further back!) I think that if I move the reader and set it all up in a darkened room at a longer focal length it will get rid of the dark centre spot of light when i can find time I'm going to give it a go at doing the whole S2FL2 fiche as it will be handy to have on the computer. the real beauty of the parts listings is of course that you can see how any part was meant to be assembled rather than the part numbers although they can still be useful occasionally

Storing as a negative is a better for printing, i thought?

well I never got around to that but it is still dwelling on my mind i will get around to this eventually particularly as having to go out into the freezing cold garage to look at the microfiche isn't very convenient, if it works and doesn't take too long i may well do the beta S2FL fiches and the trevi as well...but don't hold your breath!!!

I've started this task images are nothing special but are clear enough to help with identifying parts and how things were originally assembled should take a few days to complete (only doing about an hour per day it's tedious!) then edit each frame

well I've done about 90 pages of the fiche so far, it takes ages!! Repro. is so so but adequate to see how things go together and in most cases the part numbers. I am just not methodical enough to get it all spot on straight and no bits chopped off but at least it will be something that can be quickly referred to instead of struggling with the fiche reader in the garage. Example final pages below although the originals on my computer are obviously a larger scale than this

Looks good to me  - but must be a right pain of a job.

I'm sure some of us will owe you a beer by the time you're done.

Or you could just pop your scanned 'backup' copies on fleabay for a fiver a go....

I'm not sure what I'm going to do once it's done it was done mostly for my own benefit and that of a few beta enthusiasts I'd prefer it not to end up generally available to all and sundry as it is a lot of work I might do hard copies on paper that's what I'm doing for myself although it looks like a lot of pages.......don't really fancy indexing it all and putting on disc even more work!!

well just to update I never got any further with this but it isn't forgotten the ones that I've already done have proven useful and now that we have a 'smart' TV I can look at them on our TV screen which is great as it is really easy to see all the detail
