Just wondering whether anyone has any experience of getting to the heater fan. I've looked through previous posts, but can't really find anything.
My fan unit draws a lot of juice (from memory) - and everything dims, + I've found some wiring that looks like it's got hot at some stage. I've got an 81 Spyder - dash layout as shown below (with radio removed). I've been renovating it over the last year, and if I need to remove coolant pipes etc. now would be a good time, as the engine is out. Can anyone let me know how to get to the motor? I've tried releasing the spring clips around the heater assembly, but to me, it looks like there are coolant pipes fitted to the lower part, so it won't easily separate from the upper part. Removing the clips doesn't seem to have made much of a difference to how well joined these 2 halves are.
Any advice is much appreciated.

My recollection of this is that the you need to remove the whole heater assembly that hangs from (I think) four bolts that are located in the trough in front of the windscreen.

Clearly, in the state of build of your spyder you will also have to remove the centre console and take out the ashtray and slide before releasing the panel that houses the ventilation and heater controls. These will vanish into the dash before coming out with the entire heater assembly. Once you have it out the clips do indeed give access to the motor etc.

AFAIK the black egg box vents stay where they are because they attach to the dashboard.

I do have a heater system loose from the car. Picture attached.

Hi before you go much further please test a new heater motor Earth wire connection either direct to clean metal or back to battery -ve. Your problem description suggests a wiring problem so better to test the heater in situ with first a clean earth wire then a battery +ve connection. I suspect the motor will be fine and you will need to remove the dashboard to find the wiring faults lurking behind it.

Thanks Doug and Eric. I'll see if I can run the heater directly form a PSU, and see what current it draws with good connections before carrying on trying to extract it.
