Having become a Trevi owner just a couple of days ago, here's my first question to show my ignorance. Which timing belt does the 2 litre Trevi need? I thought it should be the same as the 2 litre twin cam Fiats (131, 132 etc) but it seems not. I am confused...  Undecided

Hello Thotos, no your absolutely right, the Beta Range uses the same engine after all.

The belts fitted to the Beta 2000, 131 Sport/131 Super Mirafiori/132/Argenta/Strada125tc/130tc are all the same - 148 teeth (though i have seen them advertised wrong on the net as having anything from 104 teeth to 146 teeth)

Should be
144 = 1600
146 = 1800
148 = 2000

Heres a bad example below - 104 teeth, what sort of twin cam this fits is anybodies guess?

148 teeth x 3/4 inch wide is what you want - i keep seeing one inch belts advertised, like the one on flebay as fitting the 2000 but not the Volumex and then saying it fits the 1600 and 1800 as well!

Yes the QH timing belt in front of me states: Lancia Beta 2000, Lancia Trevi 2000, Fiat 131 Sport.

Thanks. Got the belt now but doesn't seem to be a lot of room to work that side of the engine  Undecided  It seems so much easier in the rear wheel drive 131 with the engine facing forwards.  Grin

try an integrale or a delta hpe hf and then you'll think the beta engine bay is the size of a concert hall!!!

Think only Guy Croft does them - had them made especially to his requirements.
They do however have all the markings on them like a normal off the shelf belt.

I feel a Google search coming on.

I'm sure they used to produced not only for Guy, I had one in my Beta and it came from Betamot, with modified tensioner  from newer Lancia cars.

For my 131 (with Guy Croft 155bhp engine) I got the 1 inch belt and 'proper' tensioner direct from Guy. I can't remember exact costs but I didn't think the belt was expensive. I thought the tensioner bearing was a bit on the pricey side but Guy assured me it was a much higher quality bearing than some that are available with plastic parts and I must admit it looked like a quality item. I still haven't got round to changing the belt in the Trevi but I have been using the car a lot. Must get round to it next weekend...   Undecided

Oh dear you succumb to the Guy better quality bit - all Betas have metal components in the tensioner, no plastic (apart from the seal and the grease)
You could even have bought one from italpartman on fleaBay (Betacars Chris Bastow) for about £30.00 ish + packing.
Personally i have never seen a Beta "plastic" aftermarket item, only seen plastic on modern cars.

The belt at £30.00 is well worth it.

Anyway so long as your happy ... that's all that matters.

If anybody has a photo of one of these "dodgy inferior quality" plastic tensioners for a Beta/131 id like to see a photo.

It takes a bit more than a shiny new bearing to make me happy but I am happy with my purchase from Guy  Grin. I must admit the SKF bearing from Guy looks quite different to the 'original' Beta bearings from Chris.



I wouldn't know or like to guess if the SKF bearing from Guy is a better quality item but I think not having a circlip to hold it together is an advantage. Incidentally, when I returned from Turin in 2006 after the Centenary celebrations trip, I found that the circlip on one of the tensioner bearings on my Gamma was missing  Shocked and the bearing looked ready to fall apart, although it didn't  Cheesy. I have no idea how long I was driving the car like that but I'd suspect quite a while  Undecided. So no circlip seems good to me  Wink.

Ok, Chris sells the early type with the retaining clip - you can purchase the bearing alone (£10.00 worth) and press it in yourself.
But sometimes people damage the clip (usually due to using the incorrect tools) and the clips "fit" is sloppy - dropping out sometimes - what happened to you Thotos.

Guy sells the later style - which has the edge rolled over and makes changing it difficult if not possible.

Earlier and later carriers the bearing fits on to are different - shoulder distance from the block is different.
Guys one probably has the dimensions and correct fit of the earlier but just happens to look like the later one that's all.

They are both good - pays your money and takes your choice.

So nobody has seen the mythical plastic one?

Sorry to revice this old thread but I saw this in the QH book today for some reason it offers both a 148x3/4 and a 104x1" for 2.0 1975 - 1984. The aircon on US models doesn't run off a toothed belt does it ?

I think QH has made a mistake somewhere as Lancia\Fiat did not offer a 2000 twin cam in 1975.
Its a good possibility that the belt could be for some sort of "accessory" like aircon as you have mentioned.

Page 247 of the Haynes manual shows a diagram of a toothed belt driven power steering and aircon setup.

Its technically a timing belt, no one mentions it being a cam belt and it would i suppose fit all the different capacities over the years.

So you may have finally solved the "Case of the universal belt" can't say i would have thought about it myself.
Anybody needing one will find plenty of them on fleBay.

 I don't think I've ever seen a UK registered Beta with air con, it's funny how extras vary from market to market I was told that you hardly ever see sunroofs in German Betas (lucky them half the rust problems we have therefore never existed) and of course Recaros in Volumex coupés are as rare as hens teeth except in the UK

And more convertibles are sold in the UK as a percentager than any other Euro country by a huge margin !
