I don't think that I have ever seen chrome bonnet grilles either.

Mine are certainly black and, I believe, original to the car.

And the roofline of the S1 was lower, on the S2 they lifted it a bit (for rear passenger headroom) and that added the swage line at the back if the roof.

I think that's S2 facelift, series 2 had same roof line as series 1 (well at least i think so...)

The main S1 differences are the engine, alloy cambelt cover, instruments (similar to Fulvia3), chrome air vents and of course that bonnet, though that was retained for some time on the S2

Apart from the instruments, was the interior also retained as it was with the Spyder?

Peter

not sure that UK s1 cars ever had the yellow instruments,S2 interior is slightly different the seats lost the velvet side bolsters and probably a few other detail differences also I believe the rechargeable torch was deleted although the socket was still there

Hi Matt

Never seen the silver/chrome vents on the bonnet before, always thought they were black. Having had a look around most are black, but just seen a picture of ones which are silver/chrome on a US spec one in brown.

See

Took me a while to suss out the subtle difference in the rear part of the roof as well.

Peter

there were definitely both types but I am not sure what fits which car. It might have been an HPE vs coupé thing

I would think that would be easy enough to verify as there must be plenty of folk with S2 pre f/l on here?

Or may be one of those some do, some do not depends how many S1 body shells they had to use up at the start of the S2 era....

curiously unlike spiders S2 pre FL coupés are relatively very rare, my understanding of the roof is that it was changed for the facelift the most distinctive difference being that the sides of the roof along the gutter are rounded on S1 and S2 but on later cars they have a flat edge plus the difference already mentioned with the shape as it meets the rear window. Whilst there may have been a small element of using up parts I don't think it was widespread on cars like the Beta which were in volume production and at least in the earlier versions didn't hang around unsold for long (same cannot be said for S2FL onwards).

Yes, the roof line was a facelift thing. My 'old' 1300 had the lower roofline and that is a fairly late pre f/l.

Yes, given the numbers involved, I did think it would be the very first few at the most, so looks like a f/l change, was that the same thing for the internal rear headroom?

Has anyone got Andy Collins' presentation from BetaMeet 2012 in Norfolk? that listed all the S1 differences?

When, against my better judgement, I got persuaded into writing the beta 40th piece for the LMC rag I studied all this stuff in some detail, Beta history is not well documented even by lancia so confusion abounds. The parts books are one of the best sources to confirm changes but it takes forever to trace stuff that way, sales brochures, of which I have quite a few (hundred or so....), are good reference material but often inaccurate particularly around the s1 s2 changeover when they often used s1 photos in s2 brochures!

My coupe is (I think) 1976 manufacture, 1977 UK registered, and that has the 'rounded roof ' shell.

Could be as simple as using all the old shells with the new engine first, then tooling for a new shell.

The revised roof is definitely a s2fl introduction part of a fairly major rework of the body afaik they also changed the back panel from one to two piece at the same time

Are you still looking for rear windows? There are a couple on ebay. Tinted again, but definitely Coupe this time!
