I left a bid on it but nowhere near that amount, and I presume that figure was before the buyers premium which is subject to vat. I agree with you Peter there was nothing that special about it,I thought the red Spider on the Forum display was far superior. Several areas of the paintwork had "runs" in it and filler in the rear lower valance,for the money it fetched I would have expected better. Maybe its going back to Italy where they seem to command a higher value.

Hi All
Suspect it is going back to Italy and maybe the Gamma too. Did not look too closely at the paint or filler as they were stopping entry unless you had a catalogue when I got there, but it had the cut away rear bumper and was a Series 2 pre f/l so I guess attractive from its scarcity value, but never seen one here going for anywhere near that and there have been (still?) a few around asking £4k+ which have hung around dealers.

The cut away bumper was just for Italy ,at least as far as I know, no big deal really. I have seen an nos bumper with recess and they appear to have been made simply by a cut and shut job on a normal bumper. Spiders are very difficult to value as condition on most is questionable, to say the least, and zagato build quality was about as bad as it could possibly get even worse than British leyland on a strike day.

I am amazed that any Spiders (let alone that one) command figures approaching £7,000
I've always thought that the 4 grand + being asked by some dealers was unrealistic (and given that they haven't sold, this would seem to be correct)

Hi Peter I have to agree for UK market, but looking at prices in Italy for Lancia stuff, I think they are often in a different world and I guess not so fussy about complete originality... There is also the Spyder which is for sale in the US which recently bid to well over $9k (not reached reserve), however it was supposed to be in pretty original condition with v low mileage. The seller (dealer) also sold a Coupe for around $13K recently from what the seller said. Well I do think that a really corrosion free and mint spider should command at least 6k, I don't think I have ever seen one that good for sale recently though even the ones that look quite nice are usually in need of a lot of work. unfortunately the open top leading to extra water leaks plus the very bad finishing by zagato doesn't help long term condition the only saving grace on spiders is that most were second cars and did lower mileage, more pre facelift seem to survive than coupe and hpe

It's strange because two nice looking Coupes struggled around the £1800 mark over the last couple of weeks on eBay. Both looked ok and I'd have valued them as worth at least £2500.

I don't personally think prices of attained on eBay are indicative of the true value of a classic car. Ebay is an easy option for selling a car and those that trawl eBay looking to buy are doing so because they are looking for a bargain and want to spend as little money as possible. Call me an old cynic, but the Ebay mindset is that "I want a Rolls Royce for Mini Metro money". I can't help thinking that if your selling a car through eBay your either taking the easy option or there is a touch of desparation involved in trying to sell the car. I have bought cars through Ebay because of this mindset, but I'd never sell a car via eBay. If you are at all serious about selling a car then put in in Auto-Trader, if its a modern non specialist car or if its a classic car then sell it through a classic car magazine or a classic car auction. The classic mags/auctions have buyers with a completely different mindset, their priority is finding a nice example of a car at a the right price. I bet if you sold a car on Ebay and sold the identical car at a classic car auction the latter would achieve a higher price. Just my opinion

In general I do agree with you about the mindset, but ........
I do have a couple of examples which go against this.
Rob, the guy you met on the stand who came with me dabbles from time to time in the classic car market and a while ago bought a Renault Turbo (original rear engine, fat rear tyres etc) and he put up for Ebay auction achieving well over (a few £1000s over) what he was expecting. Also I recently sold my Chrysler Voyager, which was advertised in the Classified Section, for a fair amount over what any of the traders were prepared to offer and not that far short of what I listed it for.
My feeling on selling cars on Ebay is that you use as much for advertising as you do for actual selling. For sure if a guy bids without seeing it, you know they will assume some bad news, and in general folk will not venture too far to see a car if they do not know if they are going to win it, bit of a catch 22. So I would recommend selling via the Classified section which is not so expensive especially compared to other ways of getting the car out there.

I agree that Ebay can be useful for selling as an advertising platform, purely getting it in front of a wide audience, the downside is your having to post your mobile number up and then the numpties & tyre-kickers start calling you offering peanuts. Thats been my experience and why I just simply cannot be bothered with Ebay when it comes to selling cars.
Do Ebay Classifieds have "call-safe" or whatever the Auto-Trader facility is that uses a temporary number to hide your true telephone number?

Matt, not heard of one on Ebay. There is the issue of silly offers, but has not been my experience of getting loads of calls from wasters, but have not sold many cars that way. I think the Classified may be worth a punt as you establish the area of pricing you are expecting, so assuming you are not selling a basket case, then I would not have thought you would get many tyre kickers.

My experienced with ebay has been excellent and I have bought and sold (at a guess) 20 + vehicles - including my Spyder.
On every occassion, I have got more than I was expecting when selling and paid less than comparable cars when buying. And each deal has gone through without any hitches.
And as long as you spend the time putting together a detailed and accurate advert, you will virtually eliminate all tyre kickers and stupid questions. The beauty being you can say as much as you want rather than be limited to a 40 word advert.

I think that call safe is just an annoying money spinner for the sites that use it, tbh as a buyer really puts me off, a premium call rate to a seller unwilling to identify themselves. I find eBay ok but classified ads are best unless you need to sell in a real hurry in which case an auction might work. Can't say I've had lots of spam when selling, I do find ebays policies and charges a bit ridiculous these days though so I do wish there was a workable alternative but nothing else reaches so many so easily Sent from my MOMO11 bird using Tapatalk 2
