Hi Everyone,

I've recently purchased a Beta Coupe Project off of ebay....http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160788244144?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_538wt_934  Its been sat in a garage for 10 yrs (according to listing)..... does anyone know of this car at all?? Any info would be amazing to hear.

She's seen better days but nothing that a bit of time in the garage can't sort out.  The car comes with practically a whole cars worth of spares/trim too which is a bonus!  Apparently the previous, previous owner stripped another beta coupe for parts.

I've got my heart set on converting it to RWD with the running gear/floorpan from a Jaguar xjs 3.6 manual I also have.  I'm a fabricator/welder/engineer by trade so really looking forward to this project when the weather sorts itself out!

Glad to be here and will start a resto thread as soon as I start making some progress. Cheesy

Looks Great!. glad you got a load of spares. You should be able to get a new windscreen ok. Look forward to seeing some more photos. Allegedly the weather will sort itself out next week!

Welcome Dan, you've certainly got your work cut out of your going to stick Jag running gear into it and make it RWD.

Are you going to put the engine in the boot like "Fulviafiends" Alitalia Beta?

You did well on the buy price :-)

Welcome Dan,

Presume with the 3.6 running gear and chassis you will be setting it up as front engine rear wheel drive? Should make for some fun, just make sure carry over the brakes too, thats a heavy engine. Wink

I actually paid £425 for it with all the spares, I managed to convince the seller to end early hence the lower price.  I still think its reasonable as the parts alone that I wont end up needing should pay for the car and sort out a new windscreen (incidentally does anyone want to swap any coupe parts for a windscreen?Huh?).

Its going to be front engine RWD, I've had the tape measure out today and I'm thinking that space-frame chassis incorporating a rollcage would be the best route to take, using the Jag front and rear subframes as they're engineered rather well IMO.  Trying to morph the Jag floor into the beta looks a little over complicated and probaby too long winded.  The engine should fit ok in the bay & I'll just add the Jag tunnel for the gearbox and prop. Although this is all in my head and subject to change when I get the grinder out though lol!!!

It's actually a really light engine, 200kgs...all Aluminium block and head so for the displacement its rather quite light, the Jag weighs in at 1700kgs versus the 1000kgs of the beta.  I hope to be around the 1000kgs weight when finished which should leave me with a damn good power/weight ratio when the Jag engine's been fettled and is on the weber 45's I have waiting for it, aiming for something like 300bhp  Grin
Also a point to note is I've been in the cosworth game and owned other high powered rwd cars over the years and they all require too much mechanical sympathy...even on uprated diffs, gearboxes etc...  So this time it's kind of scrapheap challenge with a bullet proof Jag and a Beta to 'hopefuly' make something I can hit the limiter with and step off the clutch to get a smile on my face without it costing thousands each time I do.  The Jag running gear is good for stupid power and will take my abuse quite easily.  It also has LSD, inboard brakes and a getrag 265 gearbox so should hold up nicely (fingers crossed). I'm also going to add some rosejoints and in-situ adjusters to tweak the geometry once its been converted.  I've seen far too many conversions fall at the last hurdle because people underestimated geometry setup and create a dog to drive.

Anyhow, enough of my ramblings....you all seem like a decent bunch on 1st impressions and reading through the forums, roll on the project thread (although I'm restoring a G-wagon Mercedes atm but its nearly finished).

I'd imagine Mark was thinking it was an XK which would be 300kg+ - if yours is aly then I guess its the AJ6 although 200kg sounds a bit optimistic to me :-)

Should make for an interesting project though.

Hehehe yeah 200kgs might be a bit on the light side but I am ditching the cast manifolds, a/c compressor and inlet manifold, I'll also be trimming off ANY unstructural weight and re-engineering some components to be lighter (i.e alloy instead of cast brackets etc... so 200kg might be do-able yet! Wink
Anyhow the engine stakes have raised for this project now to a 4 litre I6, as this version (AJ16) has a forged steel crank which should get me some nice revs & power when on the 45's........

I collected her today, pleasantly suprised to find very little grot and rust around the body, SHEDLOAD of spares and the whole running gear of the car at present needs removing so I'll be listing them shortly.

Personally I think the car is every bit (if not more) beautiful than a mk2 escort and for a tiny fraction of the cost...also the Lancia Rally heritage and being a bit different are all plusses IMO, a perfect mk2 RS2000 drove past me on the way back with it today on the M6, I glanced in my mirrors and realised I'd made a great choice!!! Bargain car if I ever saw one.

Will start a thread soon & a sale thread :S bear with me though I have 2 cars worth of spares to sort out 1st.

Ready to pick up the 4 litre Jag engine at the weekend!!!  Can't wait to start on this project!
