Can someone with a VX please measure the diameter of the dipstick hole or the diameter of the neck of the dipstick itself.  I'm told by Mark W that the dipstick is wider than the hole on the gearbox on the non VX cars.

I need to identify if a spare gearbox is from a VX or not.

Or if anyone knows of any other unique identification points that a VX box has please let me know.

Many thanks in advance,

I'll try to check tomorrow but there are two different dipsticks for vx gearboxes not sure when the change was made but I understand that cars after a certain time have the same dipstick as other versions. my car is an early vx coupe actually built may 83 (reg jan 84) but they built trevi vx much earlier than the coupé and the change might have been made in that time period (?). Anyway I'll try to check for any other identifying features I have two vx gearboxes at the moment.

Matt

The VX box will have 19x 62 stencilled in white near the timing inspection hole. It will also have 19x 62 stamped half way down the middle casing near the drive shaft flange. This is more reliable than the dipstick hole because it is fare easier to change the diff outer casing. also if you remove this casing you can look at the crown wheel which for a VX will have 19x 62 stamped on it. VX boxes also tend to have a plastic breather, but this is not fool proof.

It will be I have stripped 8 of these now so I have a certain level of confidence on this one, although I have seen the white stencil removed by aggressive wire brush treatment the stamped area is hard the lose once you are through the grime.
