another question that all this bonnet talk brought to mind how many cars have the pins fitted that stop the bonnet going through the windscreen in an accident? For some reason they seem to have been omitted on later cars (??) even though the threads and the slotted housing remain in place, I have them on my car but the previous owner fitted them
Wasn't aware of these, can you post a pic??

this is where it goes as the bonnet is pushed back in an accident it becomes trapped in the narrow slot and this makes the bonnet fold up rather than slide over the windscreen frame and potentially into the interior and the pin itself I don't know if these are lancia ones or ones made up by a previous owner VXs definitely didn't seem to have these from new, afaik the captive thread to fit them is there in all series 2 bonnets though (not sure about series1)

The pins are OEM Lancia items.

I've always wondered what that slot was for... now I know! And no, my bonnet doesn't have the pins fitted either... Were Lancia getting slack towards the end of production I wonder... it seems a strange thing to cut costs on, safety...

Sorry, I should've said. Yes, it does. And also, now that I'm thinking about it I do remember these pins on my 1980 HPE that I owned in '89. Andrew.

Possibly because they changed the windscreen construction (laminated vs toughened) or because bonnet retainers are normally fitted on car with front edge opening and won't do a great deal on a rear opening bonnet (it's already held at the rear by the catches).

Well I think the problem of bonnets riding over the scuttle only occurs with bonnet hinged at the front and I think all Betas had laminated screens, the pins don't perform any function except in an accident

I checked my microfiche both S2FL and S2FL2 and no sign of this part not in the series 1 series 2 or S2FL paper parts books either, I do have a small amount of US market microfiche (sadly not a complete set) and bingo there is what appears to be this part 82351533 (the pin) and 10519601 (looks like a washer) I am guessing that these were to meet more stringent (at the time) US safety legislation and that some ended up in error on European spec models( )
