I have bought a Beta Coupe 2000ie some 30 years since I sold my HPE 2000ie. I'd forgotten how crowded the engine bay is! Could someone enlighten me as to how I get access to the speedo cable connection at the differential as I need to fit a new cable. I can't find a way in. Thanks.

Hi

Pretty busy on the ie I would suggest taking the wheel, wing liner and inner wing detachable plate off which should give you access to the top of the gearbox/diff

Hi

The gearbox and diff are on the nearside, so that is the side you need. The offside would be to get at the timing bel5 and water pump etc.

Thanks Peter. I remember now the joys of changing the timing belt...
Do you know if anybody does locking wheel bolts for Cromodora Alloys? Most of them seem to be for the steel wheels.
I noticed earlier a request for advice about keys. I can recommend Keysinthepost.com. They can cut Lancia keys from the key number, are quick and reasonably priced at about £20.

Hi Dave

I used McGard ones, McGard Locking Wheel Nuts - M12 x 1.25 - 27169SU, plenty on Ebay around £20

They are not perfect in that I would have preferred them to be slightly longer, but fit well in my FPS alloys, so should work ok in the Cromodora.

I used to disconnect the battery, remove it and the battery tray and the cable's knurled nut was easy to get at. Of course that was 30 plus years ago and I may not be as flexible as I once was but it's a job I'd prefer to have to do instead of many others if I find a suitable Coupe next year....

If I ever needed to any work on the dash it was something I undid as it allowed the cluster to be removed much more easily!

Ditto what Guy said. I changed my speedo cable and it was accessible by reaching in from top of engine bay and down to gearbox. I made the mistake of reconnecting gearbox end before refitting dashboard Sad

If you can remove the battery tray, it would be simpler. Only issue comes if the tray has been welded to its supports…… both my cars had this.

Hi Peter. It's got the air flow meter fixed to the battery tray. Can I unplug the AFM and lift it out complete with battery tray? The tray needs a slight repair anyway or how do I separate the AFM from the tray?

I'm fairly sure the battery tray was welded in on my ie too when I was trying to repair the gear linkages as getting that out was plan A. The AFM is fastened with bolts as far as I recall. That isn't too hard to remove.

As far as I know, only the really early cars, of which Peter has
two, had fixed trays.
I'm sure that from around 79 onwards, or even earlier,
all trays were bolted.

Give the new Speedo cable some heat protection. I always protect mine with a reflective heat protection wrap. The cables invariably fail because of heat soak from the exhaust manifold. Also make sure the cable is secure so that it doesn’t rub anywhere. The cables are short lived if left to fend for themselves.

Thanks for all the advice. My coupe is a 1982 2000ie. The battery tray is a bolt on but one of the supports has come adrift so some fettling required. The advice about protecting the cable from the exhaust sounda a good idea.Thanks
