Can anyone confirm the OE specs for the front and rear coil springs for my 1978 spider? From some pages posted by Matt in August '09 I understand the unloaded (free) heights to be 391.5 mm front and 311 mm rear. From information I got from another source, I understand the rates to be 88lb/in front and 108lb/in rear but am open to correction on all counts. I also ned to know the internal diameters of both front and rear springs as I'm having a set made and they need this information which I cannot supply without dismantling the struts and since the stance of the car is "wrong" i.e. down in the rear and high in the front, the measurements would probably be incorrect anyway. I want to drop it 30mm in the front and 10mm in the rear with about 15% stiffer springs so all information will be welcome. Thanks as always.

Neil,
When I had my custom set made I sent the old ones to be tested.
Front Test Result 85lb/in OE Spec 88ib/in
Rear Test Result 110lb/in OE Spec 108lb/in
So despite 30 years service they were very close to OE specs
The free lengths you give are the same as shown in the workshop manual for the Spider & Coupe
I'll see if I can measure the ID on a set. If you happen to be using Coil Springs in Sheffield you could tell them to wind them to the same ID as mine were.

Thanks stuar. I'm using a local firm here in Ireland reccomended to me by a friend who uses them to make bespoke springs for his rally car so straight away there's a saving on shipping! I can get reasonably accurate measurments of the internal diameters but I was hoping someone would have a spring off the car for convenience and accuracy. Anyway, if you get a chance to take the measurments, I'll see if we concur as I'd hate for the springs to leave their seats!

Yes - they are the same. Always thought the front springs were bigger diameter than the rear ones but I could easily be wrong though never measured them, the tech data doesn't specify unfortunately.
