Lads - the first act of my bride in the new Beta was to bugger the passenger side window mechanism - won't go up or down. I think she's stripped the gears.

Have taken the door apart as far as possible but can't get in because it's spot welded. Also, can't undo the screws holding the winding mechanism in.

Still waiting for my freshly ordered service manual to arrive (available from a supplier in Perth if anyone interested)

Has anyone got any tips about fixing these window mechanisms?

WOW! you have a real problem on your hands.
Your best bet is to have somebody push down the window as the handle is turned, that way you can get to the bolts holding the window to the regulator.
If not, its a tricky job with a spanner.
That way you can at least use a piece of wood to hold the window shut.

If the pozidrive screw heads are chewed up and you cannot undo them with a screwdriver try some mole grips on the heads - give them a couple of hammer blows first just to help loosen them off.
If this fails its out with the old power drill and and using a 5mm bit, drill them out until the head shears off.
The remains should come out easily.

To repair the mechanism is a bit tricky - it depend on the gear being intact! very very very rarely!
You can cut off the riveted portion to split it into individual components for inspection.

If only the spring is worn where it makes contact with the gear inside the mechanism you can actually turn it round and use the undamaged side - beats buying a new one.

Clean everything thoroughly and make sure the spring slides through smoothly - then re- build and assemble with plenty of grease and keep your fingers crossed.

Either way its a tricky one and buying secondhand regulators may only last a short period.
