I think the notch was to ensure the only rotation was between the hardened steel clutch rod and the nylon bush rather than the bush versus the soft alloy bell housing.

Yes, I think so too. Probably so that tolerances didn't need to be too exact and the bush was physically prevented from rotating when the clutch was operated and (as you say) removing any possibility of wear of the alloy bell housing.

If the notch was made as a brass part with a round peg on the end a simple round hole in the bush could take the peg end on hold the bush from rotating?

I think Paul (my engineering chap) did suggest something along those lines. It would need pegs to be fabricated and a corresponding hole in the bush for it to locate into, but still doable.

Interestingly I exchanged emails with Mark Wastnidge about this part that he sells from the Betaboyz store, and a) more stock has arrived (it was sold out when I last checked) and b) the replacement part is machined, so obviously his machinist has come up with a way of doing this. I'll buy one, examine it and see if it's worth going ahead with getting a batch done, seeing as the part is actually available.

Well I bought the BetaBoyz part from Mark, and the internal diameter of the sleeve is too small to fit onto the machined part of the shaft, which was a bit of a surprise. The shaft measures 19.16-19.18 mm at various points, and the machuining marks are still visible so there is little or no wear from new. The BB part has an i.d. of ~19.07 mm, whereas my tired old OE part has an i.d. of anywhere between 19.5 - 19.9 mm.

The above all relates to parts from the gearbox originally fitted to my S2FL Spider 2000. The refurbished gearbox that will be used with my rebuilt 2000 engine has its own clutch lever, shaft and bush and there is no discernable play and a very smooth action, so that will remain 'as is'.

my question is not directly related to the removal of the clutch actuating arm , but rather to refitting the arm, Is the arm and spline so designed so that it can only be fitted in one predetermined position ?
I have had the clutch replaced recently and since then the clutch pedal seems to be sitting a little high and yet there is no further adjustment available on the cable, which prompts me to wonder is the arm in the correct position, any advice would be most welcome.

As best as I can recall it will only go on in one position
