T'was a good afternoon.
My 84 HPE failed on Tuesday due to CO emissions at 5.8 [a high max is 4.5] and the rear fog lamp in-op.
I had ordered a timing light on Monday, so reset the timing to the recommended 28 degs btdc at 3000rpm. It ran very rough,so adjusted mixture and idle to suit. It drove poorly to the test garage, massive flat spots.
The garage were very good to me, allowed me to set it up. Now the CO was way low, around 0.8. So I backed off the retarded timing a bit, reset the mixture and idle, bingo, all within parameters. It's still running very poorly, and I've put that down to using the original carb, which is designed for a full-on Australian emissions system, which i've deleted. So i'm now in the market for a standard UK/EU spec 2000 carb.
Oh, and despite the fog lamp working for the last 10 months, it corroded itself to bits on the driveway inside 4 days! New replacement £6.99.and a neat rewire/reroute into the rear valance as well.
Advisories were: Hazards not working [ it's the switch, but the first replacement didn't work!] Dipped beams, poor pattern, rust. [ fitted good-looking replacements but clearly no good!]
So now the work continues...
Heater leaking [and bypassed at present] Carburettor Front brake discs and pads [to improve what's not brilliant] Dash top replacement [cracked in several places] Retrim Repaint Possible a/c re-gas? Not sure about that one. May still strip it out.
Cheers for now, and thanks to all for the parts and advice so far.

Hi Nigel
Glad you managed the MOT..
Are your lights via a relay or direct from switch, the lack of relay is the main cause for poor lights.or is it just needing adjustment?
I have a 2l carb if you are in need, will need refurb kit, but they are available at not silly money.

Hi Peter,
The headlights are all on separate relays and are quite bright, it's just the beam pattern he questioned. I think before I do anything, i'm going to take it out in the dark and give it a good seeing-to. Garage -man also aligned the dips, however now they appear to be pointing severely to the right. Pics attached. The carb, can you email a price, thanks!

Hi Nigel
See carb thread for answer.
On the lights, do you know the model of the lamps you have and I assume RHD ones?
Also one point is are the bulbs correct for it? Possibly silly question, but on reading a recent article re led headlights it did mention that the position of the light source in the lamp can make a difference to the pattern as the glass lenses and reflectors assume the light source is at a particular spot. Just a thought and probably irrelevant in your case....!

Well done Nigel!
On the Lights they really could be LHD or upside down. Use a modern car at the same distance from a garage door and put beam center tape on the door then match the HPE light to that.
Also give the light brand new earth wires to a really good earth point. It can transform them.

Peter,Eric,
The lenses have the 'correct' arrow pointing left, I got them from Mark Milne, Siem 12270,which match the old corroded units. I cleaned up the star earth points just below the lamps and they have all new wiring and connectors. And they are the right way up.
These Siems take the standard H4 bulbs, and they only fit in one way. I'll check that they are seated correctly.
I really wanted to fit brand new outer lamps, but failed to find ones that would definately fit and be adjustable from the rear. I'm still open to suggestions on new units.
On my SA HPE I fitted BMW E30 lamps, with a huge amount of jiggery-pokery! They were great and looked standard as well. But that was when E30's were still being sold, and breaker parts were dirt cheap!
Thanks both! Nige
