Spider or Spyder?

I've noticed that lots of us use both derivations. The (incomplete) copy Lancia factory records held by LMC and the definitive book 'La Lancia' both quote 'Spider'. So where does 'Spyder' come from? Did come from subsequent marketing material?

I'm not sure where it came from but I have a 1978 full page Beta range advert from Car magazine on my wall that says 'Spyder' while the two colour brochures I have both say 'Spider'

It was always spider as far as I know.  Spyder as used by some other manufacturers is a mistake. I have a Dutch market brochure where it is spelt 'spyder' but that's about it I think. Glad to see Neil that the LMC have found those papers on the Beta now.

Neither spelling is used in Italy according to ‘the better half’. Presumably it’s an American or English use of the word. My money is on the Yanks if you need to find the original spelling.

I have finally re-filed Barbara's papers so that they make sense. I only have Beta & Gamma records for 1978 to 1981 though. Were they microfiche after that?
