i got it running like a dream now, the problem turned out to be the bloody plug leads!!!
lesson number one...do not buy cheap plug leads of ebay
i noticed that there was signs of arcing the dizzy cap. the cap was brand new so i guessed it was the leads.
i got some new leads from my local auto factor and it started first turn of the key, a quick check of the timing and a tweak of the mixture screw and it is running perfect. the rumble has gone and it revs from tick over to beyond the red line with no missfires.
i was in such a good mood i treated the missus and kids to takeaway.

got friday off..time to start on the brakes

Dear raz1966,
I think I speak for lots of us that we are all mighty relieved to here that you are sorted!
Only one problem,
you've treated the missus and kids, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE POOR DOG!
(I bet he hates the sight of that car),

best,
Chas,

Great news and you now know the rest is in top order and can strip a carb blind folded! Over the years I have seen so many cars struggling from bad HT leads, but normally from poor or corroded connection and damp getting in too easily. I have my leads made to order by Magnecor (KV85) and have never regretted to extra expense particularly as I run modern FI and the wrong leads and non resistor plugs can ruin the input information from the sensors.

I think it reasonable to highlight what you bought on ebay to protect others

Enjoy driving it and be nice to the dog!
