Title: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: 75coupe on October 12, 2010, 12:18:56 PM I have recently fitted the Betaboyz lowered springs and find they bottom out at the front fairly easily, I have spax adjustable inserts as well. They are fine on nice roads, but as most of the roads where I live are pot holed I get frequent bottoming with an almighty bang when they bottom out. The standard springs would also bottom out, but not as badly, and I did not get the "bang". It is almost like metal to metal contact rather than the more usual cushioned bottoming out when it hits the bump stops.
Just wondering whether there are any mods I should have done when fitting the springs? Thanks Ian Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: TonyLanciaBeta on October 13, 2010, 11:10:34 PM Hi Ian
Back in 2003 I fitted/tested the 1st set of lowered BB springs, have since fitted the poly bushes/spax inserts I've done almost 80,000 miles and had no problems. I had a MK1 Golf GTI and fitted 50 profile tyres(with uprated suspension), and had exactly the same bang when hitting pot holes, put the old 65 profile tyres back on all was fine. did you by any chance replace your tyres at the same time? another thought ??? the springs are shorter than original, after jacking the car do they re-locate Correctly after lowering the car? Tony, Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: 75coupe on October 14, 2010, 08:16:44 AM Have checked location of springs - OK. Tyres are Toyo R888 185/60 x 14 - which do have very stiff sidewalls compared to standard road tyres. I have a set of road tyres, I will try these.
I may revert to HPE front bump rubbers, as I have re fitted the coupe ones when I fitted the BB springs. I had this problem when I was using standard cut down springs, which funnily enough gave the same ride height as the BB springs.... The HPE bump rubbers have a metal collar between the the upper and lower rubber donuts, where as the coupe ones I have don't. I don't get the loud bang with HPE rubbers even though they still bottom out. You can tune it out to a point by increasing the stiffness of the shocks, but this then makes the whole thing rock hard!! The roads where I live do test any suspension system to the max though!!! My wife drives a V6 Mazda Tribute 4wd and that only just copes.... Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: 75coupe on August 15, 2011, 01:39:25 PM problem solved - removed the spax plastic dust shields and the problem has gone away......You could see where they had been crushed on full bump. This may be because:
1. reduced travel due to lowered springs 2. The replacement threaded spax securing rings sit about 10mm or so higher than the originals in the top of the strut body. Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: spud on August 15, 2011, 11:43:57 PM Now that is fascinating. Removing the tiny plastic dust shields has solved it? Really? So what does it ride like now then? I'm interested because I too have some Spax and my car suffered similar problems so I removed them and fitted normal shocks.

When I fitted lowered front springs I cut the front bump stops down i.e. in half at the area where they are indented this worked very well for years. Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: archigraphe on September 14, 2012, 12:24:47 PM A topic with spring so I post in it...
My 2.0 l Carb Coupé has this height from earth to center wheel arch : Front Left : 675 Front Right : 678 Rear Left : 630 Rear Right : 622 This dimension seems to be 2,5cm higher in front and 1.5cm higher in the rear in comparison with another old coupé beta.... I don't hope to have the good dimension from a brand new Lancia Beta (although...???) but on your car what are this dimension? Thank's for your answer.. Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: MattNoVAT on September 14, 2012, 03:20:03 PM Has your car had excess weight removed ?
My standard S2/FL Coupe Front 645mm Rear 640mm Many years ago - after I bought this car I discovered that previous owner had fitted suspension from a Beta Berlina (Sedan) to my Coupe. My dampers and springs are all OEM and approximately 5 - 6 years old Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: archigraphe on September 14, 2012, 05:21:08 PM Thank's MAtt,
I think I have berlina Damper on the front ... I think I pass this winter under the car...... ::) ::) Title: Re: Coupe Lowered springs bottoming out Post by: archigraphe on November 05, 2012, 11:17:37 AM Hi to all,
So As I' m with many questions about the hybrid suspension fit to my 2l carb. coupé... I'm questionning you about the best/budget/race suspension available... Actually I drive my car on Regularity Race, this race are on tarmac for 95% of time. Next year I want to rally ing in the 50 and 65 legend race but it may be more 60%/ 40% tarmac mud race. Like this Legend Boucles de Spa 2011 CLEMENTINE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URizp71cnCU#ws) or LEGEND BOUCLES DE SPA 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8lII_mqAHo#ws) So I'm looking for not lowered spring but stronger . The FIA Gr3 fiche show us Spring from sedan fit for the coupé... This spring may be harder as thea are more compressed in static but, is the total height of the car not Higher than the original? Wiht this spring, I hope to instal Bilstein B6 on 4 corner of the car according to Matt specification. Thank for your answer to this question, as I only read answer for race application, not rallying. ;) I |
