Title: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: lanciamad on May 04, 2010, 07:07:49 PM I'm having a look at oil coolers as sometime in the future i'll need to fit one, what do people think of these... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400114998882&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400114998882&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT)

I've enquired with a few people over the months about the VX oil cooler, bracket, pipework etc but with limited luck and someone I found willing to sell wanted well over the odds. Why pay that if I can get a new and clean kit much cheaper, the matter is will they fit? Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: rachaeljf on May 04, 2010, 08:49:17 PM The only problem I see is that with the sandwich plate fitted, the filter might hit the subframe or there will be insufficient room to screw the filter on.
Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: lanciamad on May 04, 2010, 09:27:54 PM Just been out to check, my filter is mounted horizontally to the engine. There's sufficient room between the base of the filter and the subframe, and a good 2" from the lower radiator hose to end of filter, so that should be ok. Only issue I can think of is the fitment of the sandwich plate; that it's the correct thread and how the sandwich plate attaches to where the filter would, ie. if the sandwich plate has to spin on like the filter, does the fittings coming off the sandwich plate foul on anything. Or, can the sandwich plate be tightened while being held in the ideal place.
Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: hutch6610 on May 04, 2010, 11:05:36 PM The oil cooler from the UK should do the job no problem, American one is nice with the braided hoses but you can get them here from the same seller for another £10.00.
Have used these on Fiat 124's Lada's etc - oil filter threads are all the same. Now if you look at the sandwich plate in the photo the fitting in the middle is separate (enlarge the photo, see the hex at its base) - you fit the plate in the position you want and tighten it up in that orientation, then the filter goes on and it wont come loose so long as you tighten it up correctly. Fit the pipes toward the passenger side and the oil cooler fits in front of your rad behind the grill - just like the VX. If you are worried about length of the oil filter, just use a VX one, they have the same flow as the standard. On the subject of secondhand spares - there are some real clowns around ;D Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: lanciamad on May 05, 2010, 07:01:41 PM Thanks for that Hutch.
Out of both of them, that was the one he said wouldn't fit! what does he know! I can only presume, he is unsure and would rather say it won't fit to prevent dis-appointment. I personally couldn't see why it wouldn't fit, so I better start saving the pennys so I can get the braided hoses as well ;) I will probably purchase the UK one (when I can afford to), but the other did have a nice feature that the sandwich plate had ports, for pressure/temperature sensors :-\ Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: thecolonel on May 05, 2010, 09:13:08 PM I quite like the idea of an universal cooler with remote filter fitting.

I don't really want to spend more than £40 for used items.
Just to chuck it into the equation; delta hf turbo ie, anyone know if the filter block/sandwich plate is a direct fit? Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: hutch6610 on May 10, 2010, 01:08:32 AM Just to follow up.
The UK seller of the cooler kit reckons it does not fit probably because the hoses may be simply too short. The photos are generic - If they are as long as in the photo shown they would fit no problem, just check the hose lengths before you buy or have them made to your specs. I should have mentioned this before but was in a hurry to get back out and bleed a friends HPE brakes .... what fun after the brake hose fiasco. Hope i have not made you buy a kit that won't reach :-[ Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: lanciamad on May 10, 2010, 04:55:02 PM Don't worry, I havn't commited myself yet, still waying up my options ;)

Mark Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: 75coupe on May 17, 2010, 02:58:14 AM Mark,
Not really relevant to the post, but is that the original radiator in there? I ask as I have been searching for a rad to fit to my 75 coupe which has twin 45's and the original carb type rad that I have is canted forward to clear - not an ideal solution and the rad is marginal anyway now I have extra BHP. I have been looking for IE or VX rads, but they are non existent here in OZ.... Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: markwast on May 18, 2010, 07:28:29 AM That is an original rad from a VX/IE car, not sure why but seems to be a tighter fit than it was on the VX. Hence a few minor mods.
I welded some brackets to it for the Mocal oil cooler. Got to sort out cold air feeds when i get my engine swap done. I have a number of VX rads spare if required. PM me or email me at Beta Boyz. Mark Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: 75coupe on May 19, 2010, 11:36:44 AM Mark,
Have PM'd you Thanks Ian Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: mangocrazy on May 20, 2010, 12:59:40 PM Mark, pardon my ignorance, but when converting to twin DCOE45 carbs, is a VX/IE radiator required for space reasons? Or is it just a better (i.e. higher capacity) radiator? If the answer to either (or both) question is yes, then I will probably be interested in one of your spare VX rads. I have an S2 FL Spider 2 litre, by the way. I'm away for a couple of weeks after today, so please don't interpret my silence as a lack of interest!
Cheers, Graham Title: Re: Oil Cooler Kit Post by: markwast on May 20, 2010, 08:19:50 PM Answer is yes to both.
I have emailled you and Iain. Mark |
