I am in the same position, just had my HPE VX MOT'd - it passed with no problems but the tester said I should think about getting the tyres replaced as although legal they are 14 years old.
I have been on www.blackcircle.com (http://www.blackcircle.com) and prices vary for 185/64R14 86H's between £45 to £90 per corner fitted for a renowned branded tyre. Toyo Proxes appear the best value at £51.98 each fully inclusive of fitting and balancing.
Anyone have any preferences as to what an HPE may ride best on. I am not too bothered about ultimate grip, just a good ride quality and longest life- although it only does between 2,000 & 3,000 miles max per year.

I've got Toyo CF1 on my spider. Good ride, good grip - pretty impressed TBH and I'm picky with tyres too.

I'd agree that Toyo are premium quality at midrange prices they will stick well on the corners but will not wear the best if you want the best wear rate buy cheap Korean or Chinese stuff that are made of rock hard compounds and grip like Teflon (http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:Q9mIjuqtOkQavM:http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b341/BigfootFilms/frying_pan.jpg). If you are changing all 4 tyres 195/60x 14 are used by many, not sure about clearance issues might vary by brand I had avons on mine before it came off the road (about 9 years ago I must work up more enthusiasm!!) stuck like glue even with duff dampers (they sort of used to pump back up after a couple of miles!)

Just had two firestone 185/65/14's fitted to mine, £38.50 each for the tyre, £110 all in, valve, balance and disposal. My experience of pirelli's is they last forever, but don't grip the best or maybe it's my driving style :)

thanks to one and all for the advice

i like the idea of 195 by 60 x 14. sit lower and slightly wider.

the vx will only ever be a second car so mileage will be no more than 2k ( if its is i will be well happy)

thinking about some sticky tyres has any body done this?

regards to all

I've got a set of BF Goodrich profiler II on the Gamma,
fabulous road holding, cornering speeds are well up.
Really surprised as they were £40.00 a corner.

In my opinion this is the best everyday tyre.

For track days I am using the TOYO 888.
Both are 185 60 14

Just ordered 4No Toyo Proxes CF1 185/65R 14 H (86) online from www.blackcircles.com (http://www.blackcircles.com)
Bargain at £199.80 fully fitted including VAT balancing, valves etc. My local tyre centre will fit them on Saturday.
Can't beat this value considering I recently replaced two fronts on my Brera at £193 each

These are £40 from Canskill.....although you'd have to pay to get them fitted.
