Title: Clutch mounting/holding tool for Betas Post by: mangocrazy on January 06, 2021, 03:41:08 PM At some point in the (hopefully) not too distant future I will be marrying up my rebuilt 2 litre engine and my refurbished gearbox. Before I can do this I need to bolt the GC lightened and balanced VX flywheel and crankshaft up and then fit the Thema Turbo clutch I have stored away. Are clutch mounting tools that fit Beta clutch and crankshaft centres readily available or is it a case of roll your own? Getting a tool made up is not really a problem as I have an engineering firm about a mile away that will do small jobs like that.
While I was back in Stafford I measured up the various centres and depths (crankshaft, flywheel and clutch) and came up with the following results: Crank centre - 14.9 mm diameter, 28mm deep Flywheel centre - 31.9 mm diameter, 8.8mm deep Clutch centre - 20 mm (19.9 mm?) 25 mm deep The flywheel measurements are immaterial for this, but I took them anyway. So (assuming I need to get one made) do I make the two major diameters 15mm and 20mm, or would I be wiser to get them turned down to 14.9mm and 19.9mm? I suspect I already know the answer. My measurements were taken with an old-school mechanical (i.e. not digital) set of vernier calipers, so accuracy is to the nearest 1/10th of a mm. The crank end of the tool will have a depth of 28mm, with a rounded/chamfered end, and the rest of the tool will be the major diameter, probably around 150mm long to allow a good grip on the tool. I just bought a universal one with many adaptors included. I think I added some electrical tape to the adaptor going into the clutch driven plate to make it slightly tighter fitting and got on with evenly doing up the clutch fitting bolts. NB I use 10.9 grade Allen cap head bolts for this. Good call on the 10.9 cap head bolts. I'll measure up and get some ordered. |
