Title: can a HPE engine fit in a coupé?
Post by: Gerke123 on September 13, 2020, 12:40:44 PM
Hey everyone, i'm not sure wether a hpe engine will fit into my coupé. I'm currently restoring a Coupé from 1975 with a 1600 engine (from '77) with about 120.000km on it. The person who sold me his first coupe wants to get rid of his HPE and he will give it away for free. The HPE has a 2000 engine that has ran 70.000km . i want to replace that engine with the one that's currently in my coupé. My dad has read somewhere that the engine from the HPE variant does not fit in the coupé so i wanted to know from the experts on here if there is truth to that statement.

The 2000 cars have a higher bonnet central section so if you have a flat 1600 bonnet you will need to find a bonnet. Otherwise if both cars are carb engines it is fairly straight forward. Keep the 2000 Gearbox with the 2000 engine and note the release bearing for the clutch is larger for 2000 cars.

Enjoy

Eric.

Test the 2000 engine before removing it with a hot wide open throttle compression test so you really know you are installing something that works. Do an oil and filter change and consider changing the water pump and cambelt and tensioner before fitting.

Alternatively fit twin sidedraft Webers to the 2000 and then it fits under the flat bonnet!
