Hi All

I cannot find this anywhere, but sure I have in the past seen it somewhere, but can anyone confirm the difference in height of the 1.6 and the 2l blocks?

Hi Peter,

I've referred to my Haynes manual:

1585cc  stroke 71.5mm
1592cc  stroke 79.2mm
1995cc  stroke 90.0mm

So i'd assume the block heights vary by these figures.
But I may be wrong.

Not sure if it does as I thought the 1585 and 1592 were the same height?

I of course may be completely wrong.....

Isn't the hump they added to the bonnet for the 2 litre about 8mm?

The entry for the first 1800 shows cc at 1585! Ah well.

Hi All

I measured the distance from the top of the crank pulley to the fixing bolt at the top of the cam belt cover. This was only approximate, but the distances were 30cm 1600, 32cm 2000, so the approx difference is 2 cm, ie almost 1 inch. This sort of makes sense with the extra height of the bonnet when the 2000 was introduced.

Now onto the reason for the question.......

I have 3 down pipes and all appear the same height from the mating flange to where they go under the car even though one was a NOS part which has 1.6 written on it and I am fairly sure another was from a 2000. The parts book shows different parts for the 1600 and 2000 and I assumed they were different lengths to accommodate the block height, but is this true?

When I offer them up to the manifold, they look to extend too far below the bottom of the car and engine, but given my car is up on ramps and stands, it may just be my imagination. So can anyone post a photo of how the down pipe should look relative to the front subframe and sump which will give me an indication if I am correct or not?

Well you will find early 2000cc models of the Coupe, HPE and spyder came with the early flat bonnet, the 2000cc unit still fits under it no problem.


You have to be careful, how do you know somebody did not fit a 1600cc down pipe to a 2000cc car? Also how was 1.6 written on the NOS part - permanent marker,  a paper hand written label taped on it or a genuine stamped part number plate welded to it?


You assume correct and why would the book lie?

From what i remember the 1.6 pipe will fit on a 2.0l car but its too close to the subframe so will touch it at certain throttle settings and  also eventually burn the paint off. With the correct pipe you should be able to get your hand in between.

Interesting, I had not seen an original 2000 without the raised bonnet.


That is the problem, the NOS has an original QH P/N, but so far I have been unable to find a ref to it, it just had 1.6 written on a piece of masking tape wrapped round the pipe. The other two are used and I do not have a record of what they were sold as, one was most likely from a 2000 coupe.


Absolutely true, I have not found the parts book to be in error so far!


Thanks, that gives me confidence to keep looking, though a photo of one in situ would help me a lot to get a feel for spacing.

I have to disagree re 2 litre bonnets, 2 litre cars always had the high bonnet, when the second series was started 1.3 and 1.6 continued with the low bonnet for a while before the high bonnet was standardised across the range. However I do believe that the low bonnet will fit a 2 litre but obviously the clearance was considered by Lancia to be too tight especially if the bonnet mat is fitted.
The 2 series parts book is clear on the point and the press pack for the 2 litre launch states 'power bulge central in the bonnet'

I remeasured the 3 down pipes I have, having thought they all appeared the same. By placing each with the long section on the floor and measuring the flange height I found 2 had the height of approx 30cm and one was 28cm. Sadly the one at 28cm which is obviously for the 1.6 is the crappy one of the 3.....

I may just use it for now (with an add on flexible section) until I find a decent 1.6 one.
