Title: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Post by: Sandro on May 16, 2020, 11:44:28 AM Hi all,
I wonder if you can help, I'm upgrading my Battery ( It's seen better days ) and besides getting the right fit size wise. ..whats the best AH rating to get ...they range between 44amp, 55, 70 and so on. I have an ( unmodified ) 1984 2000 I.E. model. Many thanks Andrew Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Post by: rossocorsa on May 16, 2020, 01:51:17 PM The original taking was 45 Ah but you could probably go for something with more reserve

Make sure it is not a leisure battery, ie get one suitable for starting the car. Although I have not direct knowledge, I believe they are constructed different. Ie a car one is designed for high current over short periods and the leisure are designed for lower current over extended periods for mobility scooters etc. Peter Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Post by: George-S on May 16, 2020, 08:33:57 PM This discussion came up on the FB page not necessarily for an upgrade but this was what some people recommend as a replacement.

Post by: smithymc on May 17, 2020, 08:49:27 AM I got one of these last year, a Varta C6 Silver Dynamic 52 Ah. Got it from Manbat in Shrewsbury. It really has some cranking power and fits the clamp perfectly- although I appreciate mine isn't an i.e.
Mark Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Post by: betaveloce on May 17, 2020, 09:00:44 AM I have a Varta with the same characteristics as the Duracell (60 Ah and 540 A) in my HPE I.E.
The 45 Ah Rossocorsa is referring to, is for a carburated car I think. The injection cars also have a heavier alternator than the carburated ones (65 Ah instead of 55 if I recall correctly). I'm planning to replace the battery this week, I'm having power 'drop-outs' and after initially thinking it was fuel supply related I think it's electrical so a fresh battery is a good start. I'm going to take a look at the Alternator ...on one occasion the Alternator made a nasty noise ( for a period after the ignition was turned off ) maybe it was due to not getting enough power ? Thanks again Andrew. Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. I like Varta batteries and my current one has had a few too many recharges from winter lay ups I think. Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Oops, sorry, I wasn't aware that the batteries where the same despite the alternators being different... ;) Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Mark Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Post by: WestonE on May 18, 2020, 03:39:04 PM I will run with a 62 Amp Hour battery with my Bosch 65 Amp IE spec alternator, but I do have a supercharger and modern mapped FI to wire in. Have a critical look at your battery leads and consider some new custom red and black heavy gauge replacements. So many Beta items are a tatty corroded mess. A good battery earth and good battery starter/alternator connections fix many strange electrical issues. Replacements must be at least the same wire core size preferably thinner modern multi-core flexible items.
Clean up the earth connection points and add contact grease when you are done. Eric Title: Re: Replacement Battery / AH rating. Post by: Sandro on May 18, 2020, 04:11:12 PM Thanks Eric,
I think that you're right, having a decent look at some of these connections today in the Garage, they are indeed old and could do with looking at replacing and / or cleaning, I'm putting in fresh HT leads on, will check the distributor etc. A friends Dad who once worked on betas here in Denmark also thinks that it's a poor connection somewhere ( as opposed to fuel supply ) given the way the power drops and comes back ..or not as the case may be. I'll let you know what I find. Many thanks Andrew. |
