Title: Is it worth 'fettling' new cast pistons prior to install? Post by: mangocrazy on May 31, 2017, 10:07:27 PM I'm slowly approaching the point where rebuild operations can occur on my 2 litre Spider engine, and I have a new set of (allegedly) 10:1 cast Vick-Auto pistons ready to be fitted to the recently rebored and honed block. I was wondering whether to fit the pistons 'as is' or whether it's worth using a Dremel and various abrasive wheels to remove any sharp edges, casting flash and areas where there is unnecessary extra material? At the same time I was thinking of ensuring that all pistons weighed the same down to 1/100th of a gram using a set of digital scales I have.
Is this worth doing, or is it unnecessary or even unwise? I'd only be removing material from non-bearing surfaces and would only be removing modest amounts of material. Title: Re: Is it worth 'fettling' new cast pistons prior to install? Post by: peteracs on June 01, 2017, 06:23:22 AM Hi
From what I have read, sharp edges in the combustion chamber leads to hot spots, so should be avoided. If you are going to the bother of balancing the pistons then I would suggest also doing the con rods etc. Peter Title: Re: Is it worth 'fettling' new cast pistons prior to install?
