Title: Spider Diff Problems
Post by: Sloany on March 21, 2017, 08:30:22 PM
Hi,

Just after a bit of advice.
I am just putting my 78 spider project back together.
I think I have a big problem with the diff or gearbox, just wondered if anyone has advice, as I have always steered clear of these 2 items in the past!

Turning the gearbox input shaft in all gears does rotate the 2 stub shafts coming out of the diff, but, it is easy to physically stop the rotation on one of the shafts but not the other.
Also if you rotate either of the stub shafts it does not rotate the gearbox input shaft when in gear.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious but my experience on gearbox n diffs is really nil.

I'm based in Cumbria, so if anyone knows a good specialist not too far away from would be appreciated.

Thanks Garry

Garry,

That sounds perfectly normal operation of the diff to me.

If you rotate both of the stub shafts together as if the car were moving backwards or forwards that should move the gearbox input shaft

Agreed Stuart, if anything else were happening, you'd have a limited slip diff (I'll buy it) or a problem!

Yer it's all ok, was just my ignorance on the operation of the diff!
Thanks for your replies
