Title: Helpful hints on attaching new speedo cable?
Post by: aldad138 on July 07, 2016, 03:18:10 PM
My speedo cable busted and I have a new one on the way.  The connection to the tranny is easy, but anyone have hints on the best way to get in and locate/plug in the new one?  I have felt around, but no joy.

You need to take out the instrument panel, connect the cable to the speedo then connect at the transmission end last, once the panel is back in place. The tricky bit is feeding the cable through the bulkheads I think.

Agreed it is possible to reconnect the speedo end with the cable in situ but not easy, far simpler to remove the instrument panel. If the old cable is still in situ then use that to pull the new one through feeding it from whichever side that means the smaller end has to go through the grommet in the bulkhead. wrapping the end in insulating tape and spraying with silicone oil makes life simpler.

Thanks Stuart and Neil...I guess.  I am frankly a bit intimidated by the thought of pulling the instrument panel out, but if that is what is needed, I will give it a whirl.  Can I get just that cluster on the drivers side out, without doing the whole dash?

It does look like the hole through the grommet is a bit too small, but sounds like that is normal.  Wish me luck!

I realized the instrument panel comes out easily enough.  Good news.

If you have not already completed the task be aware that it is easier if you attach at the speedo end first.

Thanks Doug.  I have not done it yet, but get the cable tomorrow and will make the attempt after I get home from work.  Yes, I would figure that getting it on at the speedo, then getting the cluster back in, before attaching to the gearbox.   Cheers!  I appreciate all the help the forum gives.

From my experience, however I have a LHD, it was no really hard job. I needed to remove just the instrument cluster and battery, then inserted the cable from engine bay side to the passenger compartment. The hardest thing in the whole action was disengaging of the old cable from the gearbox...

Thanks Lucus.  Mine is LHD as well and the cable should be here today!

I got her in!  Tedious job.  But, it does not work properly so I will have to check the connection at the instrument panel.  Getting that old one off was a bear.  Mini vise grips on the top edge of the fastener and small movements.

Sometimes it is not the cable that is responsible for not working speedo, but a plastic gear that is built in the gearbox and drives the cable.
