Title: Alloy expansion tank Post by: droptop on January 09, 2013, 09:51:31 AM Does anyone know of a supplier who sells alloy expansion tanks suitable for a pre facelift spyder?
My original tank, while good, is a disgraceful looking thing with rust stains and discoloration and despite looking at several tanks online, I haven't found what I feel would be suitable (Suitable = trouble-free fit with correct inlet and outlet pipe sizes) I've tried every concoction imaginable to clean my tank while it was removed and the poor thing has ingested more chemicals than Jim Morrison. Not looking to take out a mortgage for some bespoke item as mine is fully functional, but I would like to put something shiny in it's place.j Title: Re: Alloy expansion tank Post by: Ammy on January 09, 2013, 10:34:43 AM FWIW. Mine was in a similar state, but also started to leak. Couldn't find a replacement but found one off an i.e. which you can fit, with only minor mods, and works fine.

Funny (or scary) how the obvious so often escapes me ;D Title: Re: Re: Alloy expansion tank Post by: rossocorsa on January 11, 2013, 08:53:31 AM I think expansion tanks are a big issue it's very difficult to find tanks without signs of cracking starting which of course is a risk, the late style kidney shaped ones seem particularly bad. The thought of a loss of coolant is a worry as the twin can is now difficult to source good parts for.

Coolant loss is a scary prospect and I may consider investing in a bespoke tank as there is a company about 50 miles from me who specialise in alloy fabrication, especially for ford escorts, but will do custom work as well. All their products are used extensively in competition cars here and their standard stock is certainly reasonably priced. I'll give them some dimensions and see what they say and I will post the result here. |
