Title: Petrol & oil Mixed in the engine Post by: tonylanciabeta on November 01, 2008, 12:44:23 PM I was changing the engine oil on my Beta today & realised that there was a lot of petrol mixed in with the oil. It must have happened when the fuel pump seal had perished. I was just wondering, would it do much damage to the engine? fortunately I only Start her up now & then, due to her being off the road. ------------------------------------------------------- The petrol in the oil may attack the rubber oil seals in the engine, it is best advised that the engine be flushed with a cheap brand oil to further dilute any remaining petrol in the engine, change this oil along with the filter after about a twenty minute journey. Do not be tempted to flush with a solvent flush as this can further attack the oil seals. It may be an idea to use a chemical that rejuvenates the oil seals, these are available as "leak stoppers". It is wise to take this precautionary measures as over time the seals will harden and crack resulting in a costly and time consuming repair, a stitch in time.......... ---------------------------------------------------------------- I can't see how it is possible to get petrol into the oil since the fuel pump is in a separate area and no where near the oil filler ?. ---------------------------------------------------------------- on the early carb models it is possible for fuel to leak into the engine block if the gasket fails. On the jag it is likely that the petrol was washing the cylinder bores down and hence drying them of oil, this will have caused an unusual amount of friction resulting in cylinder wear. |
