Title: Water in Rear Footwells
Post by: Neil-yaj396 on February 24, 2011, 07:59:42 AM
My rear footwells have started to collect a lot of water, usually when the car is standing rather than on the move. The front wells and underneath the rear seat (the 1300 bench pops out quite easily) are both dry. I can't see any holes underneath. The car is parked on a slight incline bonnet up. Any ideas were this could be getting in??

Just to eliminate it  - do you have a sunroof?

Neil

A stick of chalk and a hose are your new friends! Run the chalk over all the window joins sit inside and watch whilst you helper applies the hose. Where it washes off you have a leak.

Enjoy

Eric

Meant to mention that no, there is no sunroof. I remember the regular dousings from the one on my 2000ie! I will do the chalk test asap but I can't see where window leaks would end up in the rear footwells.

I sometimes get water in rear footwells.  Usually if laid up for a while.
This is coming in from around the windscreen??

Are the front footwells definately dry?

Joe, thanks, I intend to lift the front carpets to double check.

I removed all the soundproofing from under my carpets (better description is smelly soggy sponge)
If already removed the carpets do dry out pretty quick when they get get.

Another thought, I had removed door panels for repair, and when off notices water came in door (through where door panel should be.)
will have water on the step (black trim inside)  I just sealed up all holes with plastic before refitting panels..

...I can't see where window leaks would end up in the rear footwells.

??? Where d'ya think it's gonna go then... ??? Lol. Only joking... But in a car without a sunroof it's more than likely window or door seals. My car leaks through the mirror holes in the door glass...! (Yes, the mirrors are fitted!  ;D) And the interior door handles...! And the aforementioned door/window/hatch rubbers...! And the sunroof! And the windscreen...! (New screen going in on friday  :D.) And, with water, the only way is down. My car footwells are like a lake after a downpour... All on the 'to do' list...

Hope you get it sorted. It's the quickest way to spoil a lovely car- stinking mouldy sodden carpets.

Andrew.
